A soft bounce when you walk across the open span of the deck
This is usually a joist problem. The joists might be undersized for their span, or they might simply be spanning farther than they should without a beam breaking up the distance in the middle. You'll usually feel it most right at the center of a span, between supports, and barely at all directly over a beam or post.
Side-to-side sway, especially on taller or elevated decks
Sway points to a lack of lateral stability, usually missing or failing diagonal bracing between posts, or post-to-beam connections that have loosened. A deck's vertical posts resist gravity fine on their own, but without bracing tying them together, the whole frame can rack side to side under a lateral push, like a gust of wind or a group of people shifting their weight at once.

Gaps that open and close at the joints as weight shifts
Watch where joists meet beams or where hangers hold joists in place. Hardware that's loosened, corroded, or was undersized for the connection will let small gaps open under load and close again when the weight moves off, a visible sign that the connection is no longer doing its job.
One section, corner, or side of the deck feeling different from the rest
When the bounce or dip is localized rather than spread evenly across the deck, that usually isolates the problem to a single footing, post, or beam segment rather than a framing issue affecting the whole structure.
Why Footings Move in the First Place
Footings are supposed to be the fixed point everything else relies on, but ground isn't always as stable as it looks. Clay-heavy soil expands when it absorbs moisture and contracts as it dries, and repeated freeze-thaw cycles through the colder months push against anything buried in it. Loose bolts, gaps at the ledger, a post that's visibly out of plumb, or hangers with rust and pulled nails all point you toward the source rather than leaving you guessing.

Each post should sit plumb and solid on a footing that hasn't shifted, cracked, or heaved out of position. A footing that's moved needs to be reset or replaced, not just shimmed, since shimming doesn't address the soil movement that caused the problem.
Evaluate joist spacing and spans
If the bounce is concentrated in open areas of decking, the joists underneath may be undersized or spanning farther than they should without intermediate support.
